Portrait Intensive - Painting a Portrait from Life
Monday 14 - Friday 18 January 2019, 2-5pm
Learn how to paint a professional portrait from the ground up! In this course students learn techniques, approach and materials used by of some of the greatest portrait painters of all times. With an emphasis on drawing (with paint), we will paint the portrait in sight size giving consideration to anatomical features, mixing a flesh tone palette, shape design, edges, composition and the sense of the “inner world” of the sitter. Studio set-up provides one model per every two students, allowing close access to the model while giving painters the ability to carefully study the features while composing the painting. Through daily brief lectures and progressive demonstrations, the instructor reveals techniques, concepts and insights passed on from Velázquez to Sargent and now to you!
This is a five half day intensive class with 3 hours of painting a day, 15 hours of instruction total. Price for the workshop is $750 (or $1150 if combined with the Mastercopy workshop - see details below). The price INCLUDES a model fee. As we will paint a life-size portrait, a model will be provided for each pair of students. A non refundable deposit of 50% is due upon registration.
To sign up for the workshop, contact Tatyana using the website contact form. $50 discount applies for all early registrations if deposit is received by 15 November 2018.
Mastercopy workshop - Girl with a Pearl Earring
Monday 14 - Friday 18 January 2019, 10am - 1pm
Create your very own copy of Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring - arguably one of the most famous paintings of all times. Through Vermeer's masterpiece you have a chance to explore the process of accurate drawing, flesh tone mixing, color harmony, subtlety of edges and as such receive an insight into painting ideas and language that is common across styles and periods and applicable to any artist's own studio practice. Copying masterworks is one of the best ways to assimilate painting techniques and advance your studio practice as well as gain a further insight in appreciating master works

Painting Provence, June 2018
Join us for a week in Provence! This will be a fantastic working holiday opportunity built around the beauty of the region and using its scenery to learn about painting the environment. The week, taking place on 23-30 June 2018, will be spent in our lovely French host Katia's place. See the programme below.
Saturday, June 23rd. Staggered arrivals, the kitchen will have been stocked with fruit, baguettes, cheese, wine, salad, enough to make a dinner for tired travelers.
Sunday 24th. Some people might still be traveling on that day, so our plan is to visit two Provence brocantes (= antique fairs). It's a good chance to find and see lots of artwork, antique books, etc. The first one in Carpentras, the second in Isle-sur-Sorgues, one of France's largest Antique center, a beautiful town built like Amsterdam, on a crisscrossing of canals. Free afternoon, with a suggestion of visit of Fontaine-de-Vaucluse nearby. Dinner at Fontbonne at 7:00, prepared by our in-house chef, Marie-Madeleine.
Monday 25th. On the steps of Van Gogh. Painting in the morning in Les Alpilles. Picnic lunch. Visit of the Carrières de Lumières, this year it's a show on Picasso and the Spanish masters. Then visit of Les-Baux-de-Provence. Suggestion of dinner in Les-Baux or Saint-Remy
Tuesday 26th. Market morning in Vaison-la-Romaine (a lively town with Roman ruins, and medieval town). Picnic lunch. Painting in Le Crestet, an old medieval village.
Wednesday 27th. Touring around the Mont Ventoux, to see the lavender fields in bloom, and paint one. Picnic lunch. Montbrun-les-Bains, Reilhanette, Sault, Auriol.
Thursday 28th. Seguret et Sablet, painting of old village seen from a distance. Picnic lunch.
Friday 29th. Le Luberon. Visit of Gordes and Roussillon. Picnic lunch. Visit of the old Ochre factory, usine Mathieu, a good chance to purchase pigments at a very low cost. Painting of an ochre house/village
Saturday 30th. Departure. Optional visit of Villeneuve-les-Avignon and its brocante, if your departure is not until evening.
We will start most days around 9:00 am.
Cost $1500 USD per painter or $1300 for non painting partner. In Euros 1200 and 1000. The max for the workshop is 12 people and we are now about half way booked. The first instalment of $350 is due now since we have to put down a deposit for the properties.
Please let us know if you are interested or have any questions.
Sculpture Workshop with Jason Arkles
Sculpture Composition Sketching in Wax
Dates: 21-22 April 2018
In this weekend intensive course, learn how to design single and multifigure compositions using the practice of sketching in wax, the traditional way sculptors prepared for the creation of large scale, complex statuary. Students will learn not only how to quickly build up a small figure in wax using canons of proportion and a few key anatomical points, but also the historical vocabulary of poses in both single and multi-figure compositions, how drapery and objects reinforce the pose and complete compositions, how action, movement through time, and narrative are implied in a static sculpture, and how to develop a compositional idea for a narrative sculpture, from initial concept through to a finished sketch. Each student will complete several small sketches in wax. This course is suitable to those who have previous experience in figure modeling.
